In a very well written and organized memoir, Sunderland (known as Sunday to his fellow soldiers) recounts his experiences from his being drafted into the Army in 1941 to his medical release in 1945 from contracting malaria and hepatitis. He served in the Pacific theater and was in a military police company that was attached to infantry and artillery units to keep peace, enforce regulations, and maintain security. He speaks of his training in Fort Lewis, Washington, and of being on a ship bound for Pearl Harbor the day it was bombed in December of 1941. When reports were received of the attacks the ship did a U-turn in the Pacific and headed back to San Francisco. They later learned that Japanese submarines were searching for them, and had sunk a cargo ship they thought to be the troop transport Sunderland was aboard. Also included are over fifty photocopied photographs of his time in the military.
